Applied Linguistics Research Laboratory (LAPEL)
Coordinator: Dr. Pf. Expedito Eloísio Ximenes
LAPEL has 09 (nine) computers connected to the Internet—acquired with resources from the Pro-Equipment-CAPES-Edital 11/2009—for use by professors, master’s and doctoral students, and scientific initiation scholarship holders. Program students can access the CAPES Periodicals Portal through these computers. A projection screen is also available in the LAPEL for use with a multimedia projector.
Audiovisual Translation Laboratory (LATAV)
Coordinator: Dr. Pf. Sílvia Malena Modesto Monteiro
LATAV is equipped with 8 (eight) computers and 1 (one) notebook. Two computers are equipped with video editing and capture cards, connected to the internet, and have Adobe CS4 software acquired through the PROCAD-CAPES research project with the Graduate Program in Linguistic Studies at the Faculty of Letters of UFMG. Additionally, the LATAV has two printers, a 29-inch television connected to cable TV, two VCRs, a DVD player, a PC-to-TV converter Pixelview, a camcorder, an audio editing control desk, an external video editor, a multimedia projector, and a multidirectional microphone for recording audio descriptions.
Games and Digital Tools Laboratory (LAJogos)

Here, research projects are developed, and actions are carried out in serious game development, virtual and augmented reality, and e-learning, focusing on research involving language and interaction interfacing with other areas such as engineering, healthcare, and creative economy, for example.
The following equipment will be installed in LAJogos: 01 77’ digital whiteboard, 01 digital camcorder, 01 multifunctional camera, 01 digital camera, and 01 complete lighting kit. Currently, the digital whiteboard is being acquired through the CAPES Institutional Equipment Grant 24/2012 in the bidding process. The same grant enabled the acquisition of the digital camcorder, already available in the laboratory. The other equipment already has resources secured by the CAPES Equipment Grant No. 11/2014.
Experimental Eye- Tracking Laboratory (LERO)
Coordinator: Dr. Pf. Antonia Dilamar Araújo
The Eye-Tracking Equipment is installed in LERO. This equipment allows for experimental research in various areas within the scope of the Program, namely audiovisual translation, reading assessment, speech production, evaluation of games and teaching materials, language development and acquisition, and naming studies. The equipment was acquired with resources from CAPES Institutional Equipment Grant No. 25/2011 through the subproject “Equipment for experimental research with eye-tracking in the Graduate Program in Applied Linguistics.”
Language Acquisition and Clinical Linguistics Laboratory (LALLC)
Coordinator: Dr. Pf. Wilson Júnior de Araújo Carvalho
In this laboratory, research is conducted on language acquisition and acquisition disorders. The following equipment will be installed in LALLC: an electropalatograph, an ultrasound machine (for speech production research), and a digital camera. The equipment is currently in the bidding process and will be acquired with resources from the CAPES Institutional Equipment Grant – No. 27/2013. For this purpose, PosLA submitted the subproject “Teacher Training and Language Development.”
Laboratório de Estudos Críticos da Linguagem (LECLI)
Coordinator: Dr. Pf. Claudiana Nogueira de Alencar
This laboratory hosts researchers from the “Cultural Pragmatics” research project, which encompasses approaches that address new Austinian pragmatics; epistemological studies comparing the southern and northern hemispheres in terms of subaltern and eurocentric/imperialist perspectives, respectively; cultural contexts in which both language use and agency are embedded; Wittgensteinian perspectives on cultural grammar, where language uses are considered forms of life; and other related themes that stem from these.
Each of these four new laboratories has two computers with internet access, desks, and cabinets for storing documents and research data. At least two laboratories feature a network printer in addition to the individual equipment in each laboratory.
Literacy, Work, Education and Teaching Laboratory (LETRAFORTE)

Established in 2015, LETRAFORTE is a mixed laboratory, meaning its objectives may encompass activities not only in research but also in teaching and outreach. LETRAFORTE focuses on research involving multiple literacies, encompassing not only social practices of reading and writing but also various literacies such as reader literacy, literary literacy, digital literacy, multimodal literacy, and professional literacy, among others. The laboratory also integrates studies in language teaching and education, particularly language teaching, and research investigating professional activities, focusing on teaching activities. Naturally, all these areas, being part of an Applied Linguistics program, have language as their guiding thread, the foundational element and subject of analysis in the research conducted there.
Sociolinguistic Research in Ceará Laboratory (LAPESCE)
Coordinator: Dr. Pf. Aluiza Alves de Araújo
Created in 2020, the laboratory aims to conduct research in the Variationist Sociolinguistics field, particularly concerning creating spoken language databases.
